Vertical vs horizontal: what changes in the edit

A vertical film is not a horizontal film turned 90 degrees. It is a different language: different frame, different rhythm, different place for text. Here is what changes in the work and why duplicating one file into two formats does not work.

Vertical has become the default for social, yet clients still send a horizontal edit and ask for “a vertical version as well.” It does not work that way. A vertical film is a separate edit, often a separate storyboard, and sometimes a separate script.

The frame works differently

In horizontal, width is context. You show the interior, the landscape, a group of people, the product in its environment. In vertical, width is the person. The frame is squeezed at the sides, so every bit of empty space reads as vacancy.

  • Close-up becomes the default. In Reels a face or an object should occupy 60-80 percent of the frame. A wide shot loses meaning in two seconds.
  • Vertical lines read faster than horizontal ones. Ceiling height, a person’s full height, product packaging - all of it registers instantly. Horizontal panoramas turn into a thin strip.
  • Camera motion goes up-down, not left-right. The scrolling habit trains the eye to vertical dynamics. Horizontal dolly moves in a vertical frame break the rhythm.

Pacing and retention

A horizontal film on a website or in a deck can afford a five to seven second opening. In Reels you have 1.5-2 seconds before the thumb swipes.

  • Hook in the first frame. Not a logo, not a title card - immediate action, a face, a question, or an unexpected visual.
  • Shot changes every 1.5-2 seconds. A static shot held longer than three seconds in vertical feels like a freeze.
  • On-screen text is not a caption, it is part of the image. Large, centred, high contrast. Readable in 0.5 seconds. Small text at the edges is never read.

Sound and music

In horizontal, sound is often secondary - the film is watched muted on a site. In Reels, sound is part of the narrative.

  • Music drives the edit rhythm. Beat drops = shot changes. If the cut does not sit on the beat, the film feels lazy.
  • Voice or dialogue only with burned-in subtitles. Most watch without sound. Subtitles must be baked into the video, not left to platform auto-generation.
  • Sound effects (SFX) reinforce the visual. A click, a whoosh, a transition hit - all of it works on retention.

What changes in production

If the client needs both horizontal and vertical, that is two projects sharing a base.

  1. Storyboard is written for vertical separately. You cannot just crop horizontal frames - composition and meaning fall apart.
  2. Generation targets vertical. Prompts change: aspect ratio 9:16, emphasis on vertical subjects, tighter framing.
  3. Edit is a separate pass. Pace, music, text, grade - all tuned for vertical.
  4. Branding adapts. A logo in the corner of a horizontal frame fails in vertical - it either covers the face or sits in a dead zone. A separate placement is needed.

The mistake: one file for two formats

A common request: “make the horizontal, I’ll crop the vertical myself.” The result: ears of the subject sticking out at the sides, text falling off the edge, the main action pushed out of frame. That film does not work.

The correct approach: shared idea and script, two storyboards, two generation passes (or re-generation of key shots), two edits. The second format costs 30-40 percent of the first but delivers a working result on each platform.

In practice

If the budget covers only one format - choose by the primary placement. Main traffic from Reels, TikTok, Shorts - vertical. Main traffic from the website, YouTube, decks - horizontal. Do not try to feed both platforms with one file - both will lose.

FAQ

Do I need a separate script for vertical

Yes, if the film is meant to work. The idea can be shared, but shot order, shot length and on-screen text differ. Retelling a horizontal script produces a loose result.

How much does a second aspect ratio cost

Roughly 30-40 percent of the first film: part of the frames are regenerated, and the edit, text and grade are redone. Making both versions at once, rather than a month apart, is cheaper.

Can a finished horizontal film be cropped to vertical

Sometimes, if it was shot with room to spare and the action sits in the centre. More often cropping costs meaning, and such a film loses to one made for vertical from the start.
